YOUR BRAIN IS KINDA DUMB (but so is everyone's!)

Hi my love,

Have you seen those uncanny pictures and videos entirely made by A.I.? On the one hand, they are absolutely incredible - the fact that a computer can create something so complex is jaw-dropping.

But then, you watch it trying to recreate a man eating a burger, for example, and it looks completely wrong. And it suddenly makes the A.I. look laughably dumb.

Well, I hate to be the one to break it to you - but your brain is basically the same - kinda dumb.

The A.I. is exceptionally smart - just like you - but it doesn't have ALL the information, so it fills in the rest as best it can.

It knows that the burger goes in the mouth area and then sort of disappears, but the nuance and subtlety of eating is lost on it.

Well, the same is true for your brain. It gathers all the information it knows about a situation, and sort of fills in the rest.

It makes assumptions and predictions, based on what's happened before, and what you felt about it. That's the other thing - your brain (unlike the A.I.) is fuelled by emotion, which as you know, is not an ideal ingredient in logical thinking!

So put this together. You've got:

  • a bit of visual information

  • a bit of cloudy memory

  • a lot of emotion

  • several assumptions to fill in the gaps

  • a mystical prediction about the future

Sounds reliable, doesn't it? Nope, not really!

Your Natural Intelligence (N.I.) is not all that much more accurate than Artificial Intelligence! Yet you are reacting to it, as if it was THE TRUTH.

YOUR truth is not THE truth, it's simply a picture you've built up, based on a bunch of different ingredients. It's a version of the truth, that your brilliant brain has put together as best it can, so that it makes sense to you.

I'm going to add in another critical ingredient, that A.I. doesn't have, and you do: Ego.

Your brilliant brain works in tandem with your brilliant ego, to keep you as safe and contented as possible. It makes you avoid pain at all costs.

So if you are in the wrong, chances are your ego will tell your brain to rewrite that part of the picture, so that you can avoid the pain of being wrong.

However - if you've developed Emotional Intelligence, and gone beyond your basic programming, then you can access a part of the mind that says "I can handle this pain. I'm wrong. I'll fess up, and apologise. This is the mature way to alleviate this pain."

Emotional Intelligence allows you to question your basic programming. To have a healthy scepticism about what you think and believe, and explore things from another point of view - someone else's for example.

E.I. allows you - not to mistrust your thoughts and beliefs - but to have enough perspective and distance from them, that you recognise they're not the absolute truth.

This kind of flexible thinking is what allows you to have healthy relationships; to treat yourself with more compassion, and to be more compassionate to others.

So instead of treating everything you think as the absolute truth, (or worse, doubting and cursing everything you think), start to introduce that healthy scepticism, drop your assumptions, and see if there's another way to think about things.

Beep Boop. Yours intelligently,

Sophie x
